Burn violence by ex-husband

Sadia Akter, age 20 years, a sufferer of a cruel burn violence at Shibchar, Madaripur. The incidence took place at night around 9.00pm on 16th August, 2023 by the ex-husband named Sumon Shikder, age 26 years. The accused threw inflammable substance on the body of that house-wife by entering their house. Her head, face and various parts of her body were burnt. She is currently undergoing treatment at Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in Dhaka.

 

The accused is the driver of the speedboat. Four years ago, Sumon Shikder, got married to Sadia Akter. They also have a daughter. They got divorced recently due to family disputes. According to Sadia’s mother he is also a drug addict.

 

After the divorce, the accused used to go to Sadia’s father’s house and create problems. Later, the accused got angry and committed this violence along with other accomplice.

 

A multi-disciplinary team of ASF visited Sadia Akter at Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery on 21st August, 2023 and consulted with the family members of the survivor in order to know her health condition, identify their needs and how ASF can support them.

 

The Legal Officer of ASF contacted to the police station to know the status of the case. According to the police, a case has been filed at Shibchar Police Station accusing Sumon and other accomplice. The police has arrested one of them and main accused is still fugitive. They are trying to arrest him as soon as possible.

 

Leadership Training at Bogura

Leadership Training at Bogura

A 2-day long training on Leadership held in Bogura district during 28-29 May, 2023 under a project “Strengthening Acid Survivors’ Network to eliminate acid and other gender-based violence” which is funded by the Australian Government. A group of 15 acid survivors from Bogura district participated in the training. The main objective of the training was to enhance skill set of the survivors on how to negotiate and to get the support from the Government and Private sectors. Trainers discussed in details what qualities a leader should have and how a leader can move an organization forward. Two trainers conducted the training.

The training was inaugurated by Mr. Haroon-or-Rashid, Chief Executive, Light House. ASF representative Tahmina Islam, Coordinator- Program Unit was present in the training. Participants were very happy to receive the training. Light House organized the training and coordinated by the Acid Survivors Foundation.

Vaggo Rani Bauri, 18 years, underwent an acid attack on 14th May, 2023 at Rajnagar, Moulvibazar.

Accused Lal Chan Bauri, age 26 years, had been harassing that survivor for long. Recently he proposed her for marriage and she refused his proposal. The perpetrator couldn’t take that refusal and threw acid at her around 9.30 pm while she was cooking. After hearing her scream, one of her cousin poured water on her, according to her brother.

Survivor’s right eye and cheek were burnt. She got her treatment from Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College and Hospital.

Her brother filed a case in Rajnagar Police Station. The police arrested the perpetrator on 15th May, 2023 and produced before the Court. The Court sent him in the Jail.

The Acid Survivors Foundation communicated with survivors’ family and asked about their initial needs and suggested to visit ASF as soon as possible.

Legal officer of ASF provided legal advices to her brother and communicated with the Officer-In- Charge, Inspector and Investigation Officer of Rajnagar Police Station to provide legal services to the survivor.

On 21st May 2023, a preliminary meeting was held between ASF and the representatives of the Meghna Executive Holdings (MEH), on behalf of Meghna Executive Foundation, in the ASF Office, to explore opportunities for partnership and collaboration to create a meaningful impact and make a difference in the lives of acid attack survivors.

Feminist Leadership and Gender Training 2023

ASF conducted a 2-day long training session for 13 Acid Survivors represented from different district. The training was held at Dhaka on 13th and 14th May, 2023. Mr. Motahar Akand facilitated the training. In a patriarchal society, we are all too familiar with power attributed to persons of certain identities of gender, race, age, and so on. The moto of the training was to provide adequate knowledge on “Feminist Leadership and Gender”. The training was very participatory, learning and enjoyable. This training was funded by Mutual Trust Bank (MTB) Ltd.

ASF in support of Monira

ASF in support of Monira

Monira was only 15 when she was attacked with acid in 2003 for turning down a marriage proposal. She received treatment at Faridpur Medical College Hospital and Dhaka Medical College hospital before getting admitted to ASF Hospital in 2004 where she later worked as a ward attendant for 10 years.

In September 2022, Monira faced complications giving birth to her second child. Ever since she suffered from various health issues related to her liver, kidney, bladder, and postpartum complications requiring advanced treatment.

Monira’s family is poor and cannot afford the cost of multiple surgeries and repeated ICU stays. Her newborn baby also suffers from poor health. In September 2022, ASF came forward to support Monira financially and mentally.
