Another victim falls prey to acid violence this year on Wednesday, June 17th, at 2 pm in Chithulia village of Gosaibari union, Bogura; this is the ninth victim this year already.  Ripa Khatun, aged 35, was in the kitchen when she was thrown chemical acid on her back through the fence gap.

The incident was an outcome of a long-running land and court dispute between Ripa and her husband Abu Taher’s cousin named Badshah Miah. Badshah and his gang have made multiple attempts to evict Abu Taher and his family from his place of home through various threats.

According to Dr. Gazi Salahuddin, after the incident, Ripa was initially brought to Dhunat Upazila Health Complex, where she got referred to Shaheed Zia Medical College and Hospital in Bogura Sadar.  Meanwhile, Badsha Miah and his family have all been on the run and not found.

At ASF, while we were starting to feel somewhat hopeful about our declining number of acid attacks in Bangladesh, the reality is that these incidents still take place, and people still feel inclined to take such acts of revenge.

Legal Action:

Kripa Sindhu Bala, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Dhunat Police Station, has confirmed for ASF that Badshah and his accomplices have a case filed against them and an investigation is underway.  Abdul Momen Pintu, one of the perpetrators, was detained, and the search for the remaining members continue.  Crime scene evidence and written victim plus witness reports have been gathered.
